Camp CounselorJCharlier Communication Design was started in 2000, after Jim having spent his "formative years" in adverting agencies in Buffalo and briefly, in Rochester, NY. His work (logos to print advertising to TV spots) have been honored with local, regional & national awards and have appeared in major industry publications.

He is on the Advisory Committee for the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University, the board of Frank Lloyd Wright's Garycliff Estate, and on the Marketing Advisory Committee of Urban Roots Community Garden Center, the nation's first cooperative garden center.

He is a three-time past president of the Art Directors Club of Buffalo – organizing events such as Contemporary U.S. Poster Design exhibition, organizing a live painting event with caricaturist Phillip Burke and dozens more. He has organize annual portfolio review events for college and university design and advertising students throughout Western New York on and off since 1986 - for the Graphic Artist’s Guild, Art Directors Club of Buffalo, Brainstorm and the Advertising Club of Buffalo. He designed the Brainstorm/Advertising Club of Buffalo Directory for six years and was the newsletter editor for the Art Directors Club for multiple years. He was also directly involved with the local advertising awards shows (in its many forms and titles) for 22 years in a row.

He designed & produced a 120-page coffee-table book, Garden Walk Buffalo, on Buffalo's gardens, with writer Elizabeth Licata and photographer Don Zinteck. Other books he has designed include Nickel City Chef, Buffalo's Finest Chefs and Ingredients; The Buffalo Philharmonic, the BPO Celebrates the first 75 years; and AUDieu, Buffalo Says Goodbye to Memorial Auditorium.


From 2006-2013, Jim was been president of Garden Walk Buffalo, the largest garden tour in the U.S. – with more than 380 open gardens throughout a walkable portion of the beautiful city of Buffalo. These creative urban gardens are open the last full weekend of July each year. Garden Walk Buffalo attracts 60,000+ attendees from around the country and Canada every year. The tour is free and self-guided.

Through Jim’s efforts, Garden Walk Buffalo, and dozens of Buffalo gardens have been featured in national media – Better Homes & Gardens specialty publications, Martha Stewart Living online, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal,, Fine Gardening, Horticulture, Garden Gate magazine, Great Backyard Gardens, Backyard Solutions and many other magazines, websites and newspapers.

Jim is also a founder, and part of the organizing committee, for the National Buffalo Garden Festival – a six-week-long garden party of 15 garden walks, seminars & workshops, nationally-known speakers, garden-themed exhibitions, garden-themed bus tours, a garden art sale, Open Gardens throughout Buffalo Niagara, and the LEAF a Legacy project – where area landscapers make over a public space each year.

There are dozens of partners helping to make this event happen and Jim works very closely with the leadership of the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, the NYS Landscape & Nursery Association, and most importantly, Visit Buffalo Niagara.

Car SalesmanHe writes a gardening blog, featuring Buffalo gardens and gardens from his travels, as well as his own garden (which has been featured on tours, in national magazines, newspapers, books and local television).

He has written articles for Real Gardens, People Places Plants, and Leaf online magazine.

In 2010, he co-hosted a garden bloggers meet-up, with Buffalo Spree magazine editor and ranter Elizabeth Licata, for 72 garden bloggers from 23 states and Canada, showing off Buffalo’s horticultural assets. This visit resulted in positive Buffalo press on hundreds of blog posts, and newspaper and magazine articles – reaching an untold amount of readers – throughout the U.S. and around the world.

He has been told that he is the country's second leading garden tourism expert – by the country's leading garden tourism expert, Richard Benfield. Mostly, Richard says, because there is no one else. Jim has given talks about garden tourism and helped gardening groups from around the country help start, or further develop, their own garden tours. He likes to think he’s using his advertising and PR powers for good, promoting the image of Buffalo, NY that he sees. His efforts have already helped to create a new “green” narrative for Buffalo, NY, helping to dispel the snowbelt/rustbelt image of his adopted city. He will not stop until Buffalo is recognized nationally as a great gardening destination.

Package DisplayJim, and his wife Leslie, an international flight attendant, have traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe, visiting France, Italy, England, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, Mexico, Greece, and Belgium multiple times. They’ve also visited Israel, Denmark, Luxembourg, Morocco, Spain, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, Honduras, Belize, and many countries throughout the Caribbean.
